Is Dark Chocolate Healthy?

Chocolate is known to be one of the most unhealthy foods, but what if it's not? Dark chocolate is not just delicious, there are benefits to eating it too.


A 100 gram bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains 11 grams of fiber, 67% of the recommended daily allowance for Iron, 89% of the allowance for Copper, 98% of the allowance for Manganese, and 58% of the allowance for Magnesium. In addition, it contains much potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium.


Dark chocolate has a wide variety of powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants prohibit the bad chemicals you take in from breathing oxygen from damaging your body. Dark chocolate has more antioxidants than most other foods including fruits.

Blood Flow and Circulation

There is a plant-based nutrient in dark chocolate called flavanols. These help keep platelets, tiny blood cells that help your body form clots to stop bleeding, less sticky. This decreases your risk for heart attack or stroke from a blood clot. In addition, dark chocolate lowers blood pressure due to its ability to relax blood vessels.


The flavanols in dark chocolate don't just make platelets less sticky, they help your skin protect itself from UV damage and improves blood flow to the skin. This increases skin density and hydration, which causes a healthier glow.

Brain Function

Dark chocolate can improve the function of your brain. Research shows that chocolate may boost your memory, reaction time, attention span, and problem solving abilities by increasing blood flow to your brain.
